Stem Cell Therapy ? Different Views Outside the U.S
Many in the United States have very strong feelings about stem cell research and stem cell therapies. However, these opinions are not shared around the globe. In fact, in Tijuana there exists one of the few places where patients can go for stem cell therapy and treatment. For US residents, stem cell therapy abroad is often the only way they can receive effective treatments. These treatments have been found to have curing properties for such diseases and illnesses as cancer, multiple sclerosis, blood disorders, and many other chronic conditions. As such, patients are willing to travel and submit to medical procedures outside the US.

Since many of these treatments are not available in the United States, they are not covered by US health insurance. Patients travel to Tijuana and undergo treatments for their condition at their own expense. Many see this expense as their only hope for a quality life, free from the restraints and restrictions of their medical conditions. In the case of cancer patients, these treatments often mean the difference in life or death.

The umbilical cord blood of both my children was stolen, taken without my permission, by two different hospitals. This happened at O’Connor Catholic hospital in San Jose, CA in 1987 and at Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Hospital in Los Gatos, CA in 1989. Both hospitals are located in an area known as “Silicon Valley” and both my husband and myself are Harvard graduates.
My son was premature and his cord was more important than his medical treatment; with more personnel in the room for cord collection and only one pediatrician for him. I have since found out that preemie cord blood is the most valuable of all. Of course, it would have been invaluable to my son also. He survived RDS and intensive care, and with a preemie to care for, I had to forget about the theft of his cord blood. I did send a letter to the hospital which was never responded to.
Stem cell research and treatments have not been allowed in the United States because the Health Insurance Companies do not want to pay for it. It is politically naive to think that “the vocal opinions of a select few” are the reason for the “impossibility” of making stem cell treatment available in the USA. In reality, the religious right had absolutely no voice in keeping stem cell research out of the US public sector ….they were conveniently used as scapegoats.
If scientists, doctors, and researchers honestly examine the political football of stem cell research it will be found that, following the money and the blood, these treatments are considered too expensive for anyone but the elite and their cohorts. Why do the scientists, doctors, and researchers not clamor for National Health Care single payer for all? That is the only way medical progress will advance and be shared with the people of the United States.
