Stems cells are cells that are found in multi cellular organism. These cells are the most archaic cells mainly found in the foetus and embryo in the human body. Stem cells have a unique characteristic; they have the ability to multiply and renew themselves through a process called mitotic cell division and disperse into a diverse range of specialized cells.
There are basically two types of stem cells – embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are cells that have two properties – the ability to divide and create new similar cells. Embryonic stem cells are cluster of cells that are obtained from the epiblast tissue of the inner cell mass.
Stem cells are of great use to treat several life threatening diseases. The stem cells grow naturally by itself in our body but since it has the ability to cure so many diseases, scientists around the world are focused to study stem cells growth. They are making efforts to grow stem cells under laboratory conditions and by far, they have been successful.
Recently scientists have found a new factor to grow stem cells. According to researchers, the umbilical cord blood can be used as a universal source for stem cells growth. However, only a limited number of stem cells can be grown in cord blood.
Researchers have also found that by adding pleiotrophin, which has a natural growth stimulating trait, it can stimulate stem cells growth taken from a mouse bone marrow by up to 10 times. However, due to its extraordinary stem growth stimulating capacity, scientists are studying whether stem cells grown by adding pleiotrophin can cause any harm.
Researchers are conducting further studies on stem cells grown by pleiotrophin to determine if it is needed for stem cells growth. Scientists are of the view that the stem cells grown by using pleiotrophin should be used for studies in animals before using them on human for clinical trials.
Stem cells are of primary importance in the new regenerative therapy of treatment. It is considered a natural healing process, which is better and faster.
